The current project, Close to Home, includes painted ink portraits and video projections from footage that I gathered during a six-week artist residency in Beijing, China. Immersing myself in Beijing heightened my long-standing interest in the relationship between the individual and the larger collective. The social and political histories of the U.S. and China polarize the stereotypes of “groupthink” and “rugged individualism”. I suspect neither is quite accurate. Instead, I seek to envision the individual and the group simultaneously. I am interested in portraiture because it presents a sense of the human scale amid larger societal conditions – a social continuum. Because ink is a fluid medium, the paintings evoke a sense of transmutation. As I paint improvisationally, the ink drips, puddles, and spreads. The depicted body (and mind) seems to remain in a porous responsive state. The figures, slightly submerged or abstracted, gaze outward toward each other or the viewer – pensive, striving, desirous, uncertain. In some of the paintings, the recognizable figure dissolves into gestural utterances - a shifting between interior and exterior dialogues. Restless and shifting worlds seem most truthful to me. How do we connect to each other, to the body politic, or to the larger world? How do we relate within and to surrounding environments? I spent a month last year living in Beijing, China – in very unfamiliar surroundings. It was exhilarating because it forced to the surface my own impulses of desire, separation, and ultimately, connection. My work is a way of redefining how I experience what is close or far, what is intimate or separate. As the adoptive mother of a daughter who was born in China, concepts of ‘close’ and ‘home’ for me have become expanded, ungrounded, and can be inhabited both intimately and from far distances.
